High Frequency Violet Ray Simply Explained
High Frequency electric current has an entirely different effect on the human body than the crude, shocking results produced by ordinary current. There is no shock, pain nor muscular contraction from High Frequency application. This is due to the change which has been made in the current by conducting it through a series of special coils and other units which make up the Violet Ray Generator. The same current that is brought into the house for lighting and to furnish power is completely modified. Its volume or amperage is reduced to a low measure, while the pressure or voltage is tremendously increased and the oscillation raised exceedingly high. The result is that when this current is applied to the human body our nerves are insensible to the electric waves because of their enormous rapidity of movement. The High Frequency current is pleasant and painless, yet penetrative and effective.
High Frequency is applied by a vacuum glass attachment called the electrode in which the High Frequency current shows in a violet colored glow. From this is given the common name of Violet Ray.

The Construction of High Frequency Apparatus for Medical and Lecture Use.

In the March number of the Electrical Experimenter the author pointed out that high frequency currents, when properly tuned, acted as "Vital Boosters," increasing all the functions of the body and helping it to resist and throw off disease. This vitalizing effect is not due to the mere liberation of heat in the tissues, for it is produced by the very high voltage ("Tesla") currents as well as by the heavy amperage ("D'Arsonval") currents from which the thermic effects are usually obtained.
When the writer demonstrated the first therapeutic Tesla Coil and the first Vacuum Electrode - (in 1896 before a Boston Medical Society) - and suggested that the method was destined to come into general use as a vitalizing agent, he was laughed at by his colleagues; yet today there is scarcely a well-equipped physician's office in this country or in Europe that does not contain some form of therapeutic high frequency apparatus. Even the barber shops of the present time have their small "Violet Ray" outfits; and they are not by any means "fakes" for they produce real results, such as the relief of headache, neuralgia, skin diseases, et cetera.
Unlike many other forms of electricity, these currents may be administered to patients with perfect safety. In twenty years' experience in Electro-Therapeutics the author has never known of harmful results from the use of Tesla currents applied through a vacuum electrode. The writer is a firm believer in the use of the Tesla currents in the home - if each member of the family could receive ten-minute daily treatments from a small high frequency apparatus, the general standard of health would be greatly increased. This has been demonstrated in hundreds of cases.
The author has interviewed a number of more prominent authorities on medical electricity and they agree as to the vitalizing effects resulting from the daily high frequency treatments.
Violet Wand / Violet Ray
How They Work
This is not going to be an in depth article but simply a need to know explanation. If you do want a few equations, discussions on capacitors, coil building, circuit diagrams and wave form patterns then try some of the sites in our "links" section above.
There are normally two parts to a violet wand - a control unit and the violet wand handle.
The control unit at its most basic consists of a set of contact breakers, a coil and a capacitor. When turned on, you hear a buzzing sound - a noise made because the contact breakers are snapping open and shut around 55 times a second. It is when the contact breakers are open that the electrical circuit is cut off, and the energy stored in the coil oscillates between the coil and the capacitor at a much higher frequency.
Imagine plucking a guitar string 55 times a second. The buzzing sound you hear is you plucking the string at this low frequency and the note generated is the high frequency oscillating current.
In the wand handle are two coils. The first, a primary is made of thick copper wire and consists of ten or so turns around the high voltage coil underneath. The hv coil consists of 12 -15 layers of fine copper wire wound to a width of 3/4 inch - the rest is insulation.
This hv coil is like a transformer stepping up the voltage to between 30,000 and 50,000 volts and this flows out directly to a glass or metal attachment and applied to the subject. Thankfully the old established laws of energy conservation mean that current is significantly reduced as total energy remains the same (less losses such as heat).
The return end of the hv coil connects back to the mains to complete the electrical circuit - if it did not, it would not work. Interestingly it does so in one of several ways -
Directly - in which case there is mostly a physical gap at the business end - usually mica - which isolates the user from the mains - but sometimes not - which is why you need to get any new acquisition checked out by an expert.
Indirectly - two metal plates separated by a layer of mica - again to isolate from the mains - and normally buried in the outer layers of the coil.
Indirectly, layers of electrical insulation (most often Mica and waxed paper) between the primary and secondary coils - and can often be seen glowing in the dark.
Indirectly - via a capacitor - wax paper ones are not acceptable by modern standards.
Whichever system is utilized - and there are bound to be others - it is important that it is checked out by an expert before any metal attachments are used - just in case. If the isolator is an old wax paper capacitor (it has been known) then it should really be replaced my a modern one or a gap made at the business end.
The effect of this high frequency high voltage current to to jump small gaps and to travel along the surface of a conductor rather than straight through it. This is useful because it means you cannot fry your innards or stop your heart from beating and makes the whole idea of using one of these devices - less scary. The muscles also tend not react to this high frequency oscillating current.
However, it is not advisable to use near say pacemakers or metal plates holding bones together as we do not know what the effects would be. Neither are we looking for volunteers to test this out.
Laptops, digital cameras, CD's, DVD's, etc - have also not been tested.
